Moving Montreal to Windsor

Long-distance move between Montreal and Windsor

From Montreal, the truck takes Highway 20 west, then follows Highway 401 along its whole length, through Kingston, Toronto and London, to Windsor, at the southwestern tip of Ontario. The trip is about 895 km.

This route is part of our long-distance moves: your furniture is protected with blankets and strapped in the truck, and both loading and delivery follow a schedule agreed in advance.

Whether you are leaving a Rosemont apartment, a West Island house or a downtown tower, we plan the crew according to your volume. For a local move, see our Moving Montreal page.

On the narrow streets of Montreal’s central neighbourhoods, plan space for the truck several days before the move: a permit may be needed depending on the borough. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock with management.

Windsor, Canada’s southernmost city, faces Detroit across the Detroit River. A major centre of the automotive industry, it is linked to the United States by the Ambassador Bridge and is home to the University of Windsor.

This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with a price set by free quote. With nearly ten hours on the road, the move is planned over two days.

The route from Montreal to Windsor

From Montreal, the truck takes Highway 20 west into Ontario. It then follows Highway 401 through Kingston, crosses the Toronto area, and continues through London and Chatham to Windsor. The route stays entirely in Canada: the truck does not cross the U.S. border.

Allow about 9 hours 30 minutes of driving, not counting breaks: the trip is done over two days. The Toronto crossing is planned outside rush hour whenever possible. Windsor is in the same time zone as Quebec.

Preparing your move from Montreal to Windsor

For a move of this distance, allow a few weeks of preparation: a detailed inventory, well-sealed and labelled boxes, and a list of valuables you keep with you. In Ontario, remember your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and OHIP registration.

Pack a suitcase for the two days on the road and your first days in Windsor. Let us know if any furniture needs to be taken apart or given extra protection.

Leaving Montreal: access and parking

When leaving Montreal, check with your borough: a permit may be required to reserve the space in front of your door, with a lead time of 24 hours to 5 business days.

In a building, book the service elevator and let the superintendent know the loading time; in a plex, tell us about outdoor staircases and narrow passages.

Arriving in Windsor: access and parking

Windsor’s older neighbourhoods, near downtown and the river, have narrow houses with shared driveways; newer areas and the neighbouring towns of LaSalle and Tecumseh mostly have houses with garages.

Tell us if the driveway is shared, the floor and where the truck can park. Check on-street parking rules with the City of Windsor for moving day.

How the price of a move to Windsor is set

This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:

  • Volume: the number of rooms, pieces of furniture and boxes to load, which determines the truck and crew;
  • Access: floors, outdoor stairs, elevator and the distance between the truck and the door, at both ends;
  • Date: prices may vary during the peak period, in late June and early July;
  • Added services, such as packing, a piano or a pool table.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote: give us both addresses, your preferred date and a list of your furniture. You can also call us at 514-703-6147.
