From Montreal, the truck follows Highway 40 to Ottawa, then Highway 17, the Trans-Canada, along the Ottawa River through Pembroke, Mattawa and North Bay to Sudbury. The trip is about 680 km.
This route is part of our long-distance moves: your furniture is protected with blankets and strapped in the truck, and both loading and delivery follow a schedule agreed in advance.
Whether you are leaving a Rosemont apartment, a West Island house or a downtown tower, we plan the crew according to your volume. For a local move, see our Moving Montreal page.
On the narrow streets of Montreal’s central neighbourhoods, plan space for the truck several days before the move: a permit may be needed depending on the borough. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock with management.
Greater Sudbury, in northeastern Ontario, grew around its nickel mines, symbolized by the famous Big Nickel. The city has more than 300 lakes, a large French-speaking community and Laurentian University.
This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with a price set by free quote. Past Ottawa, Highway 17 is mostly two lanes, and the schedule takes that into account, especially in winter.
From Montreal, the truck takes Highway 40 west, which becomes Highway 417 in Ontario through Ottawa to Arnprior. It then continues on Highway 17 through Renfrew, Pembroke and Mattawa, bypasses North Bay and follows Lake Nipissing to Sudbury.
Allow about 7 hours 30 minutes of driving, not counting breaks. Several stretches cross wooded areas where services are far apart; depending on loading time, delivery happens the same day or the next, as agreed when you get your quote. Sudbury is in the same time zone as Quebec.
A move to Northern Ontario takes a little more preparation: a detailed inventory, clearly labelled boxes and a list of valuables you carry yourself. Also plan to exchange your driver’s licence, register your vehicle and sign up for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).
Pack a suitcase for the road and your first days in Sudbury. Good news: many services there are available in French.
When leaving Montreal, check with your borough: a permit may be required to reserve the space in front of your door, with a lead time of 24 hours to 5 business days.
In a building, book the service elevator and let the superintendent know the loading time; in a plex, tell us about outdoor staircases and narrow passages.
Sudbury is built on rocky, hilly ground: some streets are sloped and many houses have steps at the entrance. You mostly find single-family homes with driveways and low-rise rental buildings near downtown.
Tell us the slope of the street, the floor and where the truck can park. Winter is long in Northern Ontario: have the access cleared and check parking rules with the City of Greater Sudbury.
This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:
