Moving Montreal to Halifax

Long-distance move between Montreal and Halifax

Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, is about 1,250 km from Montreal. The truck crosses to the South Shore, follows Highway 20 to Rivière-du-Loup, then crosses New Brunswick through Edmundston, Fredericton and Moncton.

This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with furniture protected for the road and a price set by free quote, based on your volume, access and date.

From a plex in the Plateau to a downtown condo, we match the crew and truck to your home. For a move within the city, see our Moving Montreal page.

When leaving Montreal, plan the truck’s parking a few days ahead: depending on the borough and the street, a permit may be required, with lead times ranging from 24 hours to 5 business days. In an apartment building, also book the service elevator and let the superintendent know when loading starts.

Halifax is on Atlantic time, one hour ahead of Quebec: keep this in mind when setting the arrival appointment. In downtown buildings, book the service elevator; for a house, describe the access and where the truck can park.

For an interprovincial move of this length, prepare a detailed inventory of furniture, boxes and fragile items. Keep your documents, a first-night box and the keys with you; in Halifax, one person on site guides unloading room by room.

The route from Montreal to Halifax

After Highway 20 to Rivière-du-Loup, Highway 85 crosses Témiscouata to the New Brunswick border. Route 2, the Trans-Canada Highway, then goes through Edmundston, Fredericton and Moncton; in Nova Scotia, Highways 104 and 102 lead to Halifax through Truro.

Allow about 12½ hours of driving, not counting breaks: a trip of this length is usually done over more than one day. Note also that Nova Scotia is on Atlantic time, one hour ahead of Quebec. The delivery date is agreed with you when you get your quote.

Preparing your move from Montreal to Halifax

A move to another province takes a little more preparation: a detailed inventory, clearly labelled boxes and a list of the valuables you carry yourself. Also think about the steps that come with changing provinces, such as your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and health insurance.

Pack a suitcase for the days on the road and your first days in Halifax. Tell us if some furniture needs to be taken apart or if some items need special protection.

Leaving Montreal: access and parking

Many Montreal homes are upstairs, with outdoor staircases that are sometimes spiral. Tell us the floor, the type of staircase and your heaviest furniture so we can plan the crew and loading time.

Depending on the borough, a space may need to be reserved for the truck in front of your door, with a permit or temporary signs: check with your borough a few days before moving day. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock.

Arriving in Halifax: access and parking

On the Halifax peninsula, especially in the South End and North End, older houses often face narrow streets; in Dartmouth, Bedford or Clayton Park, there are more houses with driveways and buildings with elevators.

Tell us where the truck can park, and book the elevator if you are moving into a building. In winter, overnight parking bans may apply: check the rules with the Halifax Regional Municipality.

How the price of a move to Halifax is set

This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:

  • Volume: the number of rooms, pieces of furniture and boxes to load, which determines the truck and crew;
  • Access: floors, outdoor stairs, elevator and the distance between the truck and the door, at both ends;
  • Date: prices may vary during the peak period, in late June and early July;
  • Added services, such as packing, a piano or a pool table.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote: give us both addresses, your preferred date and a list of your furniture. You can also call us at 514-703-6147.
