Moving Montreal to Saint John

Long-distance move between Montreal and Saint John

From Montreal, the truck crosses the river through the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel and takes Highway 20 to Rivière-du-Loup, Highway 85 through Témiscouata, then the Trans-Canada in New Brunswick to Fredericton, before heading down Route 7 to Saint John. The trip is about 910 km.

This route is part of our long-distance moves: your furniture is protected with blankets and strapped in the truck, and both loading and delivery follow a schedule agreed in advance.

Whether you are leaving a Rosemont apartment, a West Island house or a downtown tower, we plan the crew according to your volume. For a local move, see our Moving Montreal page.

On the narrow streets of Montreal’s central neighbourhoods, plan space for the truck several days before the move: a permit may be needed depending on the borough. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock with management.

Saint John, at the mouth of the Saint John River on the Bay of Fundy, is New Brunswick’s largest city and one of the main ports on the Atlantic. It is home to the famous Reversing Falls, where the Fundy tide pushes the river current upstream.

This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with a price set by free quote. With more than nine hours on the road, delivery is planned over two days, taking the time change into account.

The route from Montreal to Saint John

From Montreal, the truck reaches Highway 20 through the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel and follows it to Rivière-du-Loup, then Highway 85 through Témiscouata. In New Brunswick, Route 2 runs through Edmundston, Grand Falls and Woodstock to Fredericton; the truck then takes Route 7, a highway of about 100 km that leads straight to Saint John. The route stays entirely in Canada.

Allow about 9 hours 15 minutes of driving, not counting breaks: the trip is done over two days. New Brunswick is on Atlantic time, one hour ahead of Quebec. The date and arrival window are agreed with you when you get your quote.

Preparing your move from Montreal to Saint John

A move to the Maritimes is best prepared a few weeks ahead: a detailed inventory, boxes labelled by room and a list of valuables you keep with you. In New Brunswick, you will also need to exchange your driver’s licence, register your vehicle and sign up for provincial health insurance.

Pack a suitcase for the two days on the road and your first days in Saint John. Let us know if any furniture needs to be taken apart or given extra protection for such a long trip.

Leaving Montreal: access and parking

When leaving Montreal, check with your borough: a permit may be required to reserve the space in front of your door, with a lead time of 24 hours to 5 business days.

In a building, book the service elevator and let the superintendent know the loading time; in a plex, tell us about outdoor staircases and narrow passages.

Arriving in Saint John: access and parking

Saint John is a hilly city: in the historic Uptown area and on the west side, many streets are steep and several older houses have narrow staircases. The east-side neighbourhoods have more houses with driveways.

Tell us the slope of the street, the floor and the width of the stairs, and where the truck can park. In a building, book the elevator; also check parking rules with the City of Saint John.

How the price of a move to Saint John is set

This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:

  • Volume: the number of rooms, pieces of furniture and boxes to load, which determines the truck and crew;
  • Access: floors, outdoor stairs, elevator and the distance between the truck and the door, at both ends;
  • Date: prices may vary during the peak period, in late June and early July;
  • Added services, such as packing, a piano or a pool table.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote: give us both addresses, your preferred date and a list of your furniture. You can also call us at 514-703-6147.
