Moving Montreal to Alma

Long-distance move between Montreal and Alma

From Montreal, the truck follows Highway 40 to Quebec City, then Highway 73 and Route 175 through the Laurentides wildlife reserve, before taking Route 169 to Alma, on Lac Saint-Jean. The trip is about 475 km.

This route is part of our long-distance moves: your furniture is protected with blankets and strapped in the truck, and both loading and delivery follow a schedule agreed in advance.

Whether you are leaving a Rosemont apartment, a West Island house or a downtown tower, we plan the crew according to your volume. For a local move, see our Moving Montreal page.

On the narrow streets of Montreal’s central neighbourhoods, plan space for the truck several days before the move: a permit may be needed depending on the borough. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock with management.

Alma, on the east side of Lac Saint-Jean, is crossed by the Grande Décharge River, which powers one of the region’s large aluminum smelters. It is the largest city in the Lac-Saint-Jean area, known for its beaches, the Véloroute des Bleuets cycling trail and its lively summers.

This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with a price set by free quote. The crossing of the Laurentides reserve, at higher altitude, calls for close attention to the weather in winter.

The route from Montreal to Alma

From Montreal, the truck follows Highway 40 along the north shore to Quebec City. It then takes Highway 73 toward Stoneham and Route 175, which crosses the Laurentides wildlife reserve for about 150 km, before turning onto Route 169 through Hébertville to Alma.

Allow about 5 hours 15 minutes of driving, not counting breaks. Route 175 is a four-lane divided road, but the terrain and snow can slow traffic in winter; depending on loading time, delivery happens the same day or the next, as agreed when you get your quote.

Preparing your move from Montreal to Alma

Make an inventory of your furniture and boxes, noting heavy or fragile items. The move stays within Quebec: update your address with the SAAQ, the RAMQ and your service providers.

Pack a suitcase for the road and your first days in Alma, and keep important documents, medication and keys with you.

Leaving Montreal: access and parking

When leaving Montreal, check with your borough: a permit may be required to reserve the space in front of your door, with a lead time of 24 hours to 5 business days.

In a building, book the service elevator and let the superintendent know the loading time; in a plex, tell us about outdoor staircases and narrow passages.

Arriving in Alma: access and parking

Alma spreads along both sides of the Grande Décharge, with Île d’Alma in the middle. You mostly find single-family homes with driveways and two- or three-storey apartment buildings, often with outdoor staircases.

Tell us the type of staircase and where the truck can park. In winter, have the driveway cleared and check snow-removal parking rules with the City of Alma.

How the price of a move to Alma is set

This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:

  • Volume: the number of rooms, pieces of furniture and boxes to load, which determines the truck and crew;
  • Access: floors, outdoor stairs, elevator and the distance between the truck and the door, at both ends;
  • Date: prices may vary during the peak period, in late June and early July;
  • Added services, such as packing, a piano or a pool table.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote: give us both addresses, your preferred date and a list of your furniture. You can also call us at 514-703-6147.
