Moving Montreal to Peterborough

Long-distance move between Montreal and Peterborough

From Montreal, the truck takes Highway 20 west, then follows Highway 401 to Newcastle, where Highway 115 heads north to Peterborough, at the gateway to the Kawarthas. The trip is about 470 km.

This route is part of our long-distance moves: your furniture is protected with blankets and strapped in the truck, and both loading and delivery follow a schedule agreed in advance.

Whether you are leaving a Rosemont apartment, a West Island house or a downtown tower, we plan the crew according to your volume. For a local move, see our Moving Montreal page.

On the narrow streets of Montreal’s central neighbourhoods, plan space for the truck several days before the move: a permit may be needed depending on the borough. In a tower, book the service elevator and loading dock with management.

Peterborough is known for its hydraulic Lift Lock, one of the highest in the world, on the Trent-Severn Waterway. A student city thanks to Trent University and Fleming College, it is surrounded by the lakes and cottages of the Kawarthas.

This route is not one of our published packages: we organize it like our other long-distance moves, with a price set by free quote. For a cottage in the Kawarthas, tell us about the access: private road, slope or gravel driveway.

The route from Montreal to Peterborough

From Montreal, the truck takes Highway 20 west into Ontario and follows Highway 401 through Kingston, Belleville and Port Hope. At Newcastle, it takes Highway 115 for about 60 km to the Peterborough bypass.

Allow about 5 hours of driving, not counting breaks. This route avoids downtown Toronto; depending on loading time, delivery happens the same day or the next morning, as agreed when you get your quote. Peterborough is in the same time zone as Quebec.

Preparing your move from Montreal to Peterborough

Make a list of your furniture and boxes, and tell us about heavy, fragile or bulky items, such as a canoe or patio furniture. As you change provinces, also plan for your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and OHIP registration.

If you are moving near Trent University, book early for late August. Keep your documents, valuables and keys with you.

Leaving Montreal: access and parking

When leaving Montreal, check with your borough: a permit may be required to reserve the space in front of your door, with a lead time of 24 hours to 5 business days.

In a building, book the service elevator and let the superintendent know the loading time; in a plex, tell us about outdoor staircases and narrow passages.

Arriving in Peterborough: access and parking

Downtown Peterborough, around George Street, has older houses often divided into units, with narrow staircases; the west and north ends offer newer neighbourhoods of houses with driveways.

Tell us the width of the stairs and where the truck can park. Check on-street parking rules with the City of Peterborough, which are stricter in winter.

How the price of a move to Peterborough is set

This route is not one of our published packages: the price is set by quote, based on your move. It mainly depends on four things:

  • Volume: the number of rooms, pieces of furniture and boxes to load, which determines the truck and crew;
  • Access: floors, outdoor stairs, elevator and the distance between the truck and the door, at both ends;
  • Date: prices may vary during the peak period, in late June and early July;
  • Added services, such as packing, a piano or a pool table.

Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote: give us both addresses, your preferred date and a list of your furniture. You can also call us at 514-703-6147.
