A well-planned move starts about 8 weeks ahead. By spreading the tasks out week by week, you avoid last-minute stress, compare prices calmly and arrive on moving day with your boxes packed and your paperwork done.
Here is the complete checklist used by the Déménagement Bon Avenir team: tick each task as you go (the boxes are clickable) or print the page to keep it handy.
This is the time for the big decisions: the date, the budget and what you are really taking with you. The fewer items you move, the less the move costs and the faster it goes.
Bon Avenir tip — budget
To get a ballpark figure before requesting a quote, check our prices or get an instant estimate with our moving price calculator. To keep the bill down, see our tips for reducing the cost of a move.
Good dates go fast, especially at the end of the month, on weekends and around July 1 in Quebec. Book as soon as your date is confirmed.
Bon Avenir tip — booking your movers
Always ask for a written contract that includes everything you were promised. Quebec’s Office de la protection du consommateur recommends a clear, detailed agreement with the mover. Also mention access constraints (floor, stairs, elevator, parking distance): they affect how long the move takes, and therefore the price.
A month ahead, take care of the paperwork. In Quebec, several government bodies can be notified in a single step.
Good to know — electricity and Internet
Hydro-Québec: submit your moving notice online in your Customer Space; Hydro-Québec states that online address changes are free, while an administration fee may apply by phone. On moving day, write down your meter readings.
Internet: installation appointments are often harder to get during peak season. Call your provider as soon as you know your date so your connection is active when you arrive, especially if you work from home.
SAAQ: by law, driver’s licence holders and vehicle owners have 30 days after the move to give the SAAQ their new address (the SQCA does it for you).
Packing always takes longer than expected. Go one room at a time, starting with the ones you use least.
Bon Avenir tip — packing
An overfilled box bulges, a half-empty one gets crushed: fill boxes completely and fill gaps with paper. To properly protect dishes, frames and fragile items, see our little packaging tips and 10 tips to survive your move.
Elevator and parking
In an apartment building, ask the manager or superintendent to reserve the elevator (with wall padding if possible) for the planned time slot at both addresses. Also check where the truck can park near the entrance: some municipalities require a permit to occupy the street or reserve parking spaces. Check with your city and pass the information on to your mover.

Children and pets
Children: if possible, leave them with a relative for the day. Otherwise, pack them a bag with their favourite toys and set up their room first in the new home: familiar things are reassuring.
Dogs and cats: a stressed animal can slip out while doors are open. Have someone look after it, or settle it in a closed room with water, food and its litter box or blanket. After the move, update the address linked to its microchip and check your new municipality’s pet licence rules.
Need help putting furniture back together? Our furniture assembly service can take care of it.
Ideally 6 to 8 weeks ahead, and even earlier for a move at the end of the month or around July 1. If your date is already close, our last-minute moving service may be able to help, depending on availability.
About a month before the move. The Service québécois de changement d’adresse (SQCA) notifies 7 government departments and agencies in one step, including the SAAQ, which must be informed within 30 days after the move. For your mail, order Canada Post Mail Forwarding before you leave.
The price depends mainly on the volume to move, the number of movers, access (floors, elevator, parking) and distance. Check our prices, use the price calculator for an instant range, then request a free quote for a price tailored to your situation.
Everything you’ll need on the first evening and the next morning: important documents, medication, chargers, toiletries, sheets, a change of clothes, snacks, a few tools and your pet’s things. Keep it with you rather than in the truck.
Yes. In an apartment building, book the elevator with management at both addresses. Also check where the truck can park near the entrance and whether your municipality requires a permit. Well-prepared access saves the crew time, which saves you money.
Yes. Our packing and unpacking service can handle some or all of your belongings. If your move-out and move-in dates don’t match, we also offer Bon Cube storage.
